Think of one thing only: a long, deep-purple vegetable with shiny skin, light in the hand, white and inside. Aubergine is the British word; Americans say eggplant.

Borrowed from French aubergine, from Catalan albergínia, from Arabic al-bādinjān, from Persian bādingān, ultimately from Sanskrit vātiṅgaṇa — the word travelled west with the plant itself.

這個字繞了半個地球：源頭是梵語 vātiṅgaṇa，經波斯語 bādingān、阿拉伯語 al-bādinjān（帶著阿拉伯文的冠詞 al-），傳進加泰隆語成 albergínia，再由法語寫成 aubergine，最後被英語借走。字根本身講的就是這種蔬菜，沒有藏著別的畫面——但這條路線正好說明了茄子怎麼從印度一路西行進到歐洲的廚房。
