If something is astounding, it surprises you so much that you almost cannot believe it. This is a strong word — stronger than surprising, and a little stronger than . You use it when a result, a view, a skill, or a piece of news is huge, strange, or far better (or far worse) than anyone thought possible. People say it in speech and in writing; it is not stiff, but it is not a small everyday word either. If the surprise is only mild, astounding sounds too big. Though actually, speakers do stretch it when they want to sound , the same way they stretch incredible.
