If you are assertive, you tell people what you need in a clear, steady way, and they notice you. You do not shout them down, and you do not stay silent. English-speaking teachers often praise this: assertive is treated as good, aggressive (pushing others) as not, and passive (never speaking) as not either. In that culture it is a compliment — confident and direct. Though actually, in a room where people are expected to be soft and polite, the same behaviour can feel too sharp. Being assertive is about fair, open asking, not about winning a fight.
