Aspiring, in front of a job or a way of life, means you are not there yet but you hope to be, and you are usually already trying: an aspiring actor, an aspiring chef, an aspiring politician. It is the everyday adjective; newspapers use it without thinking. It can be kind, and it can also be a little patronising — “an aspiring novelist” sometimes means “not published yet,” said with a smile. People almost always put a role after it. You do not often hear “I am aspiring” with nothing following. Compared with , this is the word students will actually meet.
