Arithmetic is the most basic part of math — adding, , multiplying, and dividing numbers. It's what you learn first, before algebra or geometry. People also use the word loosely outside of school, for the plain numbers and calculations behind a real situation: 'the arithmetic doesn't add up' means the numbers, costs, or plan simply don't work out.
