Land or weather that is arid is very dry because it gets almost no rain, so plants find it hard to grow.
乾旱的
A picture to hold: ground so dry it cracks — nothing can take root, because the moisture that feeds growth simply isn't there.
一片曬到裂開的乾土。不是「有點乾」，而是乾到連種子都長不起來——缺的不是水本身，是那個讓東西能生長的滋潤。這個畫面裡有兩層：表面的乾，和乾所造成的「什麼都長不出來」。arid 用在哪裡，這兩層通常都跟著走。

From Latin aridus 'dry', from arere 'to be dry, be parched'.
來自拉丁文 aridus（乾的），動詞 arere 是「乾枯、被烤乾」。同一個根也在 ardent、arson 這一系的「燒」的概念附近打轉——被熱烤到失去水分。所以 arid 從字源開始就是「被曬乾」的狀態，不是單純沒水。
