Argentina is a large country in the southern part of South America. Its capital is Buenos Aires. Most people there speak Spanish. In older English you may still see the Argentine for the same country, though actually that wording feels dated now; today we just say Argentina. The name points to silver: Latin argentum, “silver,” plus an ending that makes a place-name, after the Río de la Plata, the “silver river” on its coast. Taiwan students often meet the country first through football. It is not Armenia, and it is not Africa.
