An archaeologist is a person whose work or serious study is archaeology: understanding ancient societies by examining what remains of their buildings, graves, tools, and other things they left. Though actually, the job is not mostly treasure and running from traps. A lot of it is slow digging, measuring, and writing, and much of what they find is ordinary — bits of cooking pots, not gold. They are not palaeontologists. Palaeontologists study ancient life such as dinosaurs; archaeologists are after people. British spelling: archaeologist; American English often: archeologist.
