You can picture 'anyway' as a hand that aside whatever was just said and pushes the conversation forward regardless. Literally 'in any way' — no matter which way things go, this still stands. From that one move come two flavours: 'it happens regardless' (the obstacle doesn't change it), and 'never mind that, let's move on' (brushing a side-point away to get to the point).

Compound of 'any' + 'way', literally 'in any way / by any path'. The brush-aside meaning grows from 'no matter which way, this still holds'.
