Anomalous means not what the pattern led you to expect — a result, a case, or a thing that sits oddly beside the others. Scientists call a reading anomalous when it does not fit the curve; a teacher might call a grammar form anomalous when it refuses the usual rule. It does not by itself mean “wrong” or “bad”; it means “off the usual line,” and you still have to ask why. It is a formal, school-and-science adjective. In casual talk people say odd, strange, or weird instead. The matching noun is anomaly.
