You can picture African as a label that ties something back to one place on the map — the continent of Africa. Point it at a thing and it says where that thing comes from or belongs: African music, African elephants, African countries. Point it at a person and the same tie becomes who they are: an African.
可以想成：這個字像一條線，把某樣東西牽回地圖上的同一個地方——非洲。線的一端固定在那塊大陸，另一端可以接在很多東西上：音樂、國家、動物、食物，接上去就是在說「這是從那裡來的、屬於那裡的」。同一條線接到人身上時，這個字就從形容詞變成名詞，直接指那個人。
