Aerobic has two related uses. In exercise, aerobic exercise (like running, swimming, or cycling) is exercise that raises your heart rate and breathing over a period of time, using oxygen steadily - this is where the term 'aerobics' as a type of exercise class comes from. In biology, aerobic describes anything that needs oxygen to live or work, like aerobic bacteria, as opposed to 'anaerobic,' which means without oxygen.
