An adulterant is a substance someone puts into food or drink — and sometimes into medicine, fuel, or other goods — so the thing is no longer pure. They often do it in secret, to make more money: a cheaper powder in milk powder, water in spirits, a cheap oil in olive oil. The adulterant is the extra stuff itself, not the act of adding it. You will meet the word in food-safety news and in lab reports. It is a cold, technical word, not a kitchen word.
